New Sleek Sony BRAVIA 3DTV Models – NX713 and NX813

Posted by SuperStoreSearch Team on Friday, 19th November, 2010.

Sony BRAVIA 3DTVs

Sony builds up its 3DTV offering with two new high end LED backlit TV models with 3D Readiness, and slim and stylish designs in the form of the BRAVIA NX713 and NX813.

Both Sony 3DTV models feature slimmer and sleeker designs, with smaller bezels around the edges of the screen.  The Sony NX713 comes with Motionflow 100Hz screen refresh picture processing, while the more expensive Sony NX813 has Motionflow 200Hz processing – aside from this difference in screen refresh rate, both models appear to be similar in specification and features and can be used with the optional designer TV stand which features  2.1 channel sound speakers in the base and tilts the TVs at 6 degrees – apparently the optimum viewing angle.

There’s also some built in Internet Content capabilities with video streaming from sites like Youtube, LoveFilm, picture viewing on Flickr and news updates from social sites Twitter and Facebook.

These new Sony BRAVIA TVs are 3D ready but require you to purchase an extra 3D Sync transmitter to play 3D content – with the idea that you only pay for 3D when you are ready to view it with suitable 3D programming, such as the new 3D services coming from Sky 3D subscriptions and Virgin Media.

The Sony NX713 comes in a 40 inch and 46 inch version, while the Sony NX813 is a substantial 55 inch TV model.

LED TVs

Posted by SuperStoreSearch Team on Monday, 5th July, 2010.

LED TVs are a new generation of flat screen TVs and they look set to surpass the standard LCD TV.  However, the term LED TV which has been used by many of the electronics manufacturers and brands such as Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic, Philips,  and LG Electronics – is more accurately described as an LCD TV with LED backlighting technology, a form of illumination used in liquid crystal displays, which can help increase readability, particularly on small screens in low light conditions.  LED backlighting is used in LED TV screens instead of  fluorescent lighting which is more common in traditional LCD TVs.

LED TVs offer deeper contrast ratios and more richer and vivid colours – and since LED TVs are built without the bulky fluorescent tube lamps, they can be made incredibly thin – as an example, Samsung LED TVs (from the 8 Series) measure in at just 1.2″ (that’s an ultra-slim 29.9mm).

LED TVs come in a variety of screen sizes with some of the most popular being 32 inch, 37 inch and 42 inch LED TVs.  LED TVs can be bought from leading consumer electronic brands.

TV Aspect Ratios – Get the Picture.

Posted by Kieran Ball on Wednesday, 26th May, 2010.

Ever wondered why the picture you see on your TV isn’t the same as the one you get at the cinema? The fact is it’s all to do with aspect ratios.

Aspect ratio is the relationship between the width and the height of any video image viewed on a screen, whether it’s your TV or at the cinema. But, why the difference? Why shouldn’t the picture you see on your telly be the same as the one at the picture house? Well, up until the 1950s, it would. Back then, all movies were 1:33:1, also known as 4:3. That meant every video image had 4 units of width for every 3 units of height. This became known as the Academy Standard and almost every classical movie you can think of was displayed using this standard. So when the time came for TV screen sizes to be standardised, it made most sense to opt for 4:3.

But as more and more people owned TVs, instead of going to the movies, people stayed at home in front of the box. Cinemas needed to make changes to the way they displayed movies in order to add something extra to the viewer experience. They did this by making movies in widescreen aspect ratio.

Widescreen experimentation had been happening since the early 20s but it wasn’t until the 50s until the widescreen format really took off when 20th Century Fox introduced CinemaScope, which later developed into Panavision, the most common widescreen format used today. Right now, the two most common aspect ratios used are Academy Flat (1:85:1) and Anamorphic Scope (2:35:1 Panavision/CinemaScope). What this basically means is Academy Flat is 1.85 times as wide as it is tall, and CinemaScope, or Scope, as it is more commonly referred to, is 2.35 times as wide as it is tall. Traditionally, TVs have been made in 4:3 with recent large screen HDTVs adopting 16:9. It is these differences in aspect ratio that has resulted in issues with viewing movies on TVs.

Why Widescreen?

Widescreen movies convey more dynamic scenery to the viewer, but when this is transferred to traditional home TVs, the image is too big to be viewed. Two main solutions have been developed to counteract this: pan & scan and letterbox. With pan & scan, the image is centered on the screen. However, this results in up to 50% of the original widescreen composition being lost, which in turn is why most videophiles prefer the letterbox transfer format, where the entire video image is shown with black bars at the top and bottom.

The problem is many people like to see the whole screen utilised. What they don’t realise is that they are missing a large portion of the original image. So, if you want to see a movie the way the director envisaged it, that’s why you need those bars at the top and the bottom of your screen, unless, of course, you can afford to install a full screen cinema in your home.
