Will 2011 Be The Year Of Internet TV?

Posted by Kieran Ball on Tuesday, 11th January, 2011.

Internet TV has been around a while but it hasn’t really taken off. However, 2011 could be the year when that all changes. Manufacturers believe that the user interfaces  for Internet TV are now advanced enough to allow users to control the content they want to watch more easily.

Google Leads The Way

In the race to win over users, Google TV is the hot favourite. The cloud computing  pioneers will be hoping that their Internet TV technology is as popular as their eponymous search engine.

Google has teamed up with Logitech to provide the boxes that will connect users to the Internet via their TV set and Sony is integrating Google’s technology into its newest TVs and Blu-Ray devices.

What’s more, Google is incorporating the popular Android operating system along with their Chrome browser. This will offer access to applications from the Android App Store and full Flash support. Theoretically, you should even be able to use an Android phone as a user interface with Google’s set-top box. The prospect of full Internet access, coupled with Android integration on your TV could very well give Google the edge on its competitors.

Yahoo! Connected.

Yahoo! and Samsung are collaborating too. The result is the Yahoo! Connected TV. These TVs come with an integrated Yahoo! widget allowing users to view their favourite sites on the Internet. Although the service will initially only be available on Samsung’s Internet@TV range, Yahoo! has also started shipping their Connected technology in other media players, such as Blu-Ray devices, media servers and set-top boxes.

The downside with Yahoo!’s technology is that users will only be able to access certain sites, which could prove to be a barrier to some customers.

Apple TV

A quicker way to get to grips with Internet on the telly might be Apple TV. Apple’s device has been around a while and has just been upgraded with a lower price tag. However, there are drawbacks with Apple’s offering. Although the device allows you to stream content from the Internet, much of it, such as iTunes content, has to be paid for and there’s no flash support or web browsing capability. So if you’re looking for that sort of functionality, you might be better off opting for one of Google’s set-top boxes.

Ultimately, the key to success in the Internet TV arena may very well depend on how easy companies make it for users to integrate Internet TV technology with their current hardware. And right now, Google seems to be the only company with the capability to deliver the sort of functionality customers are looking for.

New Sleek Sony BRAVIA 3DTV Models – NX713 and NX813

Posted by SuperStoreSearch Team on Friday, 19th November, 2010.

Sony BRAVIA 3DTVs

Sony builds up its 3DTV offering with two new high end LED backlit TV models with 3D Readiness, and slim and stylish designs in the form of the BRAVIA NX713 and NX813.

Both Sony 3DTV models feature slimmer and sleeker designs, with smaller bezels around the edges of the screen.  The Sony NX713 comes with Motionflow 100Hz screen refresh picture processing, while the more expensive Sony NX813 has Motionflow 200Hz processing – aside from this difference in screen refresh rate, both models appear to be similar in specification and features and can be used with the optional designer TV stand which features  2.1 channel sound speakers in the base and tilts the TVs at 6 degrees – apparently the optimum viewing angle.

There’s also some built in Internet Content capabilities with video streaming from sites like Youtube, LoveFilm, picture viewing on Flickr and news updates from social sites Twitter and Facebook.

These new Sony BRAVIA TVs are 3D ready but require you to purchase an extra 3D Sync transmitter to play 3D content – with the idea that you only pay for 3D when you are ready to view it with suitable 3D programming, such as the new 3D services coming from Sky 3D subscriptions and Virgin Media.

The Sony NX713 comes in a 40 inch and 46 inch version, while the Sony NX813 is a substantial 55 inch TV model.

World’s First 3D TV Without The Glasses – Seeing Is Believing

Posted by Kieran Ball on Friday, 15th October, 2010.

Toshiba has successfully produced the first TV sets that allow you to watch 3D programming without the need for 3D glasses. Without doubt, this will be a major coup for the company, as TV manufacturers trip over themselves in order to be the innovators in the brave new world of 3D TV.

Thinking Outside The Box

Certainly Sony, LG, Samsung and Panasonic will be looking on at Toshiba’s newest development nervously, as their own models, rolling off the production lines, all require glasses and user reviews to date haven’t exactly been glowing. In fact, Panasonic has already cut prices in the US in order to stimulate demand.

It’s become clear that end-users are finding the glasses uncomfortable to wear (not to mention aesthetically unpleasing) and the overall 3D experience isn’t living up to the hype. Add in the high cost of purchasing the TV and the glasses, and it’s easy to see why many are sticking with tried and tested large-screen LCDs and plasmas.

However, Toshiba may not be the only manufacturer that’s set to release the first glasses-free 3D TV, Philips has been working on similar technology for some time and is said to be developing their technology in tandem with a method of upscaling standard 2D images into 3D.

It’s All About Vision

What we do know is that Toshiba is basing its format on Nintendo’s 3DS gaming console. This technology consists of a ‘parallax barrier’ made up of a thin layer of material on the screen with slits that allow the eye to view alternate sets of pixels, thereby creating the 3D effect.

Up Close and Personal

The disadvantage is that the technology was designed to be used with handheld devices. With bigger screens, the viewer needs to sit in a specific position to be able to experience the full 3D effect. In the case of Toshiba’s 20-inch screen, this means sitting at just 35 inches away in a centrally defined field of just 40 degrees. This, of course, will make it difficult for more than two viewers to watch the TV. So, cuddling up will be a pre-requisite if more than just one person wants to enjoy the full 3D effect.

The company is said to be working on a 56-inch model, but, until this appears, will there really be much demand for what is set to be the most expensive 20-inch TV in the world. As many people will have already forked out on a large-screen LCD/Plasma in the last couple of years, it may be a while yet before we see 3D TV really take off.

Sky 3D Channel Launches in UK – Taking the 3D Experience Home

Posted by SuperStoreSearch Team on Sunday, 3rd October, 2010.

Sky 3D has gone live in the UK as Europe’s first dedicated 3D television channel with up to 14 hours of 3D programmes showing every day, airing from 9am onwards.

To get Sky 3D there will be a monthly subscription fee of about £61, but Sky customers who are already paying for the top Sky World HD package can get the Sky 3D channel for free.

With the success of blockbuster 3D movies like Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, the consumer appetite for 3D programming was set and 3D has been appearing in the news ever since.  Many big brands unveiled new 3D TV products at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2010) in Las Vegas, with some analysts predicting that 3D will help revitalize the TV industry.

A number of 3D-ready TVs are available to buy today from brands likes Samsung, Sony, Panasonic and LG with prices starting from approximately £720.

Virgin Media has also launched its own 3D Movies On Demand service to its cable tv customers, where you can watch 3D films on a pay-per-view basis.

Until now, the 3D viewing experience was limited to mostly IMAX screens and movie theatres, but with the launch of 3D programming from the major satellite and cable tv providers and the availability of 3D BluRay players and gaming, it now appears that the immersive 3D experience has truly come home.

10 Best DAB Radios Under £99

Posted by Mike Wheatley on Wednesday, 29th September, 2010.

Although years ago there were many people who said that the days of radio were numbered, in fact the opposite has proven true, with millions of people tuning in each and every day. Whether you’re at work, in the car or just lazing around the house, the radio is a pleasing companion. DAB Digital Radios offer a wide choice of stations to listen to, low interference, next generation technology and dozens of new features not seen on a traditional wireless set. With over 50 different DAB Digital Radios on offer for under a hundred pounds, choosing the best one might be a tricky decision, so we’ve picked out 10 of the Best DAB Radios under £99.

10.  PURE EVOKE-1S DAB Radio

The Pure Evoke-1S DAB digital radio is a spin on the original Evoke-1 radio, however the biggest difference is that this model is truly portable now, because it’s possible to use it with Evoke’s new £30 rechargeable battery, the ChargePak, giving you 24 hours of playtime with each charge.

But that’s not all this striking new model has: It’s affordable, at just £75.99, the 1S model comes with a USB input, auxiliary and headphone inputs and outputs, the ability to save up to 30 different stations, and just like every other Evoke you can attach it to speakers to transform the radio’s mono sound into a stereo sound radio.

The Pure Evoke-1S DAB radio is also very environmentally-friendly, using less than a watt of power when in standby. Meanwhile the display is made from clear OLED with no backlighting required, and even the packaging it comes in is made from recycled materials!

The clincher with the Evoke-1S is another big positive for Pure – the sound from its 76mm speaker is articulate and smooth, for a mono design it’s very spacious, with more clarity and poise than any of its direct rivals.

9.  Roberts Duologic DAB Radio

This new model from Roberts couldn’t possibly be any more different from its Ecologic 4 predecessor.

With its classic, sleek design and simple, easy to use interface the Roberts Duologic oozes in appeal, and indeed becomes even more appealing when you see the price, only £61.52.

What makes it special though is its sound, something quite altogether different. The audio is organized and composed, creating a real punch and featuring wicked dynamics. With treble and bass controls for tweaking the sound, the Roberts Duologic is a great radio to listen to.

8.  Pure Elan II DAB Radio

Another new release from Pure, at just £82.40 the Elan II combines quality design and construction with great features like the ReVu for DAB rewind and pause.

Elan II oozes class with its sleek black satin finish, its anodized aluminum fascia and chrome handle. And with its twin 3″ full range speakers, the stereo sound quality is exceptional as well, no matter if you’re listening to the radio or your favourite tunes on your MP3/iPod.

For true portability, fit a £30 ChargePak battery and you’ll have over 24 hours of playtime. The Pure Elan II is, just like its sister the Evoke, an environmentally friendly radio made from specialized components that minimize impact on the environment.

7.  Roberts iDream CRD-42 DAB Radio

We’ve tested dozens of Roberts radios in this low cost price range, everything from luxury DAB portables to complete micro systems, and now finally this function-heavy beauty, the i-Dream CRD-42.

While the slightly alien design of the iDream is a bit uninspiring at a first glance, what with its clunky looking buttons and odd looks, it soon went up in our estimation when we started playing with it.

What with its iPod dock, DAB/FM tuners, auxiliary inputs and alarm functions there are certainly more than enough features to play with, making it a great toy for anyone who likes to play with them. What’s more, we were very impressed with both the smooth audio quality, and the price, just £63.99, not bad at all for such a functional device.

6.  Roberts Classiclite DAB Radio

Another smart offering from Roberts, the Classiclite DAB Radio boasts a battery life of up to 100 hours, meaning you’ll be saving money on batteries when comparing this with most other radios.

With an ultra stylish, two tone black and white design, the Classiclite has all the aesthetic appeal you’ll ever need, complete with a white backlit LCD display.

Features include a USB port, inputs for an MP3 or iPod, an unlimited number of station presets, alarm clock and funky looking scrolling display so there’s plenty of gimmicks and everything you could ask for in a portable radio, all for just £53.98.

Probably the best thing about it though, Roberts Classiclite tunes itself in and the audio sounds almost perfect, with no interference at all, excellent reception and clarity.

5.  Pure Siesta Flow DAB Radio

While the original Pure Chronos has grown up, spawning into the Chronos iDock, a new, sleek model has slotted into its place. First we had the Pure Siesta, and now it’s younger sister, the Pure Siesta Flow comes to shove it off the bedside table.

While it lacks the aesthetic quality of the Chronos and is perhaps slightly more fiddly with its small buttons, the Siesta Flow more than makes up for it with its outstanding sound quality and value for such a small radio.

It doesn’t skimp out on its features either – not only does it offer DAB tuning, there are three different alarm settings, FM RDS, and a range of trick text features as well. You also get a choice of black, white or silver colours.

Sometimes the audio is patchy if the bit-rate of broadcasts is suspect, but there is always the FM tuner you can use. The Siesta Flow is focused and coherent, a great entry level radio available for just £69.90.

4.  Roberts Sound 80 DAB Radio

At just £83.90 the new Roberts Sound 80 DAB Digital Radio features a 3-way speaker system and bass woofer, both wrapped up inside a sleek, well glossed Piano Black cabinet, introducing excellent acoustics into the portable DAB radio arena.

Tune in to a DAB/FM waveband or plug in your MP3 or iPod through the auxiliary input and enjoy extraordinary clarity. With other features including a multi function alarm clock, the Roberts Sound 80 truly is a portable radio you can use anywhere.

3.  Roberts GlowTime CRD-51 DAB Radio

The Roberts GlowTime CRD-51 DAB digital radio is a great little bedside table companion. With its stylish and compact design, it’s possible to make room for it anywhere.

The GlowTime CRD-51 features a full screen clock display, multi function alarm and lets you choose to be woken by either your favourite DAB radio station or a high pitched buzzer that is sure to drag even the worst morning people out of bed.

With a choice of black, white and pink, blue backlighting and an easily navigable menu displaying all major functions, the GlowTime CRD-51 is one of the best low-cost bedside DAB radios, weighing in at a price of just £44.85.

2.  Pure Chronos iDock Series II DAB Radio

The Chronos iDock Series II by Chronos comes fully compatible with both the latest iPhone and iPod models, bringing together digital DAB radio and iPhone/iPod docking to provide a world of convenience at your fingertips.

Along with its stylish new look and the improved audio quality that comes thanks to the optimized, 2.5 custom wound digital amp and speakers are a vast array of useful features, including adjustable snooze and sleep timers, multiple alarms that are fully customizable and even reduced power consumption.

The LED display features auto brightness control and there’s even a PowerPort feature allowing you to hook up USB accessories.

With four alarms, which can be set for weekends, weekdays or just one time only, a sleep mode function allowing you to fall asleep to your favorite tunes and adjustable snooze timer, the Chronos iDock Series IIA, costing from just £77.99, is a top-notch radio that you deserve.

1.  Magicbox Touch DAB Radio

The Magicbox Touch DAB Radio offers crystal clear clarity digital stereo sound, encased in a modern looking, sleek black cabinet.

Features include a touch sensitive display for ease of use, DAB and FM auto scanning, up to 20 station presets (10 DAB and 10 FM) and bright blue backlit LCD display.

With an RDS clock and outputs/inputs for headphones and auxilaries, the Magicbox Touch Dab Radio offers both versatility and functionality at a low price of just £49.85.

Prices are confirmed correct at time of submission but may vary later, please check the product pages for the latest price updates.

Fab DAB – Top 5 DAB Radios

Posted by Kieran Ball on Friday, 24th September, 2010.

DAB or Digital Audio Broadcasting has really only come into its own. It might sound complicated, but, quite simply, it’s a form of digital technology for broadcasting radio stations. With the number of radio stations transmitting via DAB increasing every year, if you’d like to listen to your favourite radio programming in pure digital, you’re going to need a DAB receiver.

So what exactly are the advantages of DAB Radio over your old analogue wireless? To begin with, DAB is far more robust than FM transmissions. You either get a good signal or you don’t get a usable signal at all. Additionally, there’s less noise and DAB provides much more stable reception if you’re on the move.

Of course, tuning by ear becomes a thing of the past. Simply hit the button and your digital radio tunes itself to your favourite programme.

With the overcrowded radio waves of today, DAB also allows more channels in the same frequency band, which means although FM radio is still popular, DAB is clearly the most sensible way forward for radio in the future.

So here are our top five digital radio picks out there today.

5. Pure Digital Evoke Mio

The Pure Digital Evoke Mio is ideal for someone just starting out with digital radio, as it also incorporates a FM tuner and, at just a little over £100, it won’t break the bank. It also comes in 4 cool retro colours – if you’re into that sort of thing – and you can plug in your iPod if you get bored of what’s on the radio. Perfect for the kitchen!

4. Technika DAB-108P

For out and about, try the Technika DAB-108P. This portable packs a real punch in terms of sound and comes with a clear, easy-to-use display. Best of all, it’s very affordable (currently under £30).

3. Vita Audio R4

Can’t live without your trusty iPod? Then pop it into Vita Audio R4. This is a classy looking machine that comes with a CD player and even a USB flashdrive, so it’s more than capable of taking over as your primary music machine at home.

2. Pure Evoke Flow

Another feature worth considering is a DAB radio that’s also capable of playing online stations, such as the Pure Evoke Flow. Of course, you’ll need an Internet connection too.

1. Roberts Robi

Our final selection, curiously enough, is actually an iPod accessory known as the Roberts Robi. It solves the lack of radio on the iPod by receiving both DAB and FM signals. If you have a device at home that has an iPod interface, hey, presto, you can enjoy full-on digital radio programmes from your main home hi-fi, as well as on the move.

Kingston Home Theatre

Nice! Coming in at a wallet-annihilating £200,000, this Kingston Home Theatre set-up comes with a mammoth 140 inch Screen Research Curved X-Mask screen. There’s even a Niveus ProN4 media server with 500 GBs of storage for your movie collection. Sit back and relax in D-Box Motion ready Fortress Matinee seats. Serious kit for the seriously loaded.

Think that’s pricey? Check out this cinema set-up modelled on the Batcave.

The Batcave

It’s not the specs that’ll cost the big bucks here, but the accessories. A ‘fantasy’ set-up like this could set you back £300,000 and that’s before you’ve installed any audio-visual equipment. POW!

Of course, designing your home cinema room after your favourite movie isn’t uncommon, check out this Star Wars inspired theatre.

Star Wars Theatre

This is a ten-seater with automatic doors, naturally, and a twinkling fibre optical star field. This out-of-this-world home theatre was actually designed by one of the set designers on Star Wars. And the cost? Astronomical!

The Grand Daddy of Home Cinema Setups

But when it comes to ‘blowing the budget out of the water’, Jeremy Kipnis wins hands-down with his $6 million home theatre system. Yes, you did hear right! It cost six big ones to put this installation together. It includes an ultra-high resolution Sony SRX-R110 digital cinema projector, 8.8 audio powered by both solid state and vacuum tube amplifier and not one, but 16 18-inch subwoofers.

Of course, you don’t need $6 million to create a great home cinema system. All you need is a spare room in your home, which can be customised to your own taste and a few decent components. For example, the Samsung HT-BD1220 could be the foundation of your very own great home cinema set-up. Couple this with the likes of the Samsung LE55C650 55 inch LCD TV that includes Internet and you’ve got the makings of a great home theatre that can even download movies. Finally, add a Blu-ray player, such as this BDPS370 from Sony and you’ve got a great little home cinema that won’t cost you the earth.

No home theatre, however, would be complete without the best seat in the house and for that, you could do much worse than this Napoli Recliner. There you go! Your very own killer home cinema for under £2000, with plenty left over for as much popcorn as you can eat.

Happy viewing.
