The square-shaped 17 inch monitors of yesteryear have become practically obsolete, and in their place wide, flat screen monitors are the most popular choice. Resolution	Speakers	Extras

The resolution of a PC monitor refers to the amount of pixels displayed on screen. The more pixels you have, the finer the onscreen detail of images will be. Many monitors are able to display at a variety of different resolutions, ranging from 640 x 480 to as high as 1920 x 1200, though this will depend on the monitor and the graphics card that you have installed on your PC. Usually, LCD screens display sharper images when they are set at native resolution. In most cases this is 1024 x 768 for 15 inch monitors, 1280 x 1024 for a 17 inch monitor, 1440 x 900 for a 19 inch, 1680 x 1050 for a 22 inch and 1920 x 1200 for a 24 inch screen. With a higher resolution it’s possible for the text and images displayed to be smaller, so there is potential for more content to be displayed onscreen. If you are going to be working with graphic design tools or editing photos then higher resolution is preferable.	Built in speakers on your monitor are a useful feature, as it means you won’t have to connect independent ones up to it to get audio. Often though, built in speakers don’t have the same sound quality or as high a volume as you can get with separate speakers.	There are many additional features for monitors that while being useful are not really essential. These include microphones, USB ports, HDMI input ports for attaching a DVD player or a camcorder and memory card readers allowing you to view photos on screen and bypass your PC. Some more expensive monitors come with iPod docking bays which allow you to plug straight into the monitor and play, while there are also some that feature TV tuners, allowing you to watch terrestrial TV direct from your monitor.

What Format Do I Choose?

Nowadays there are two common formats available when considering PC monitors, LCD and CRT. The CRT monitors are old technology however, and are on the way to becoming obsolete. However they are still a good choice for anyone who works in the field of colour production as they provide better colour fidelity. For this reason they are still popular with people who work with photography, videos and print media.

However, LCD monitors are by far the most popular format, and there is good reason for that. LCD monitors, being flat, take up much less room than any CRT monitor. They also use less energy and weigh less. At the same time, LCD monitor prices have fallen dramatically in the last couple of years.

On the downside, LCD monitors have a much reduced viewing angle in comparison to CRT monitors, and some of them are unable to display fast motion correctly. Due to the LCD panel’s slow response time, you may sometimes see blurs or trails when viewing fast motion. This problem is usually eliminated or reduced with higher performance LCD monitors, but some cheaper models are guaranteed to suffer with this.

Two Aspect Ratios

LCD monitors come in two different formats, commonly known as aspect ratios. The most common format, seen as the standard format is 4:3. Meanwhile, widescreen monitors have an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 16:10. The choice of aspect ration usually comes down to individual preference, though you should note that widescreen monitors are often a little more expensive than standard screen monitors. A widescreen aspect ratio is a good choice for anyone who wants to edit and view videos on a regular basis. They are also useful for side by side displaying of two or more documents simultaneously, so it’s possible to work on more than one application at the same time.

Do You Play Games or Watch Movies?

If so, then you should definitely consider a monitor that has a fast response time. This is a measurement of the speed in which a monitor is able to turn pixels on and off. A low response time means that during fast motion sequences you are more likely to see blurred images as a result. This is only going to be a problem if you like playing games or watching videos, as you are unlikely to come across fast motion while browsing the internet. Look for a response time of 12ms or less if you don’t want your gaming or viewing experiences to be impaired.

The reduced viewing angle of LCD monitors needs to be compensated fro, and having a good stand is the best way to do this. You should look for a stand with tilt and swivel adjustments at the very minimum. Better stands also allow some height adjustment, while the very best stands also feature portrait and landscape modes.
Consider what you use your computer for. If you only use it for browsing the internet and sending emails, then the only consideration for you is screen size, and the ability to view multiple windows or not. However if you use your PC for playing games or multimedia tasks like video editing, it’s essential to consider a high performance monitor with high color fidelity and image quality.
