Overall Rating:
Bagless vacuum cleaners have an inbuilt container which collects the dust and dirt and which needs to be emptied on a regular basis. The advantage is that the user does not need to buy costly replacement bags as with a bagged vacuum cleaner, but bagless vacuum cleaners are often more expensive to buy in the first place.
Steam vacuum cleaners use steam technology in addition to suction for deep cleaning. Steam vacuum cleaners can be portable, cylinder or upright in design. They can generally be used on most types of floors (except hardwood floors), plus upholstery and curtains.
Upright vacuum cleaners have an upright handle and bag attached to the vacuum cleaner. Many people find them easier to control and more efficient than cylinder vacuum cleaners, although other people find them too bulky and heavy. They have motorised brush heads which make them more suitable for picking up pet hairs than cylinder vacuum cleaners. Many upright vacuum cleaners are not as good as cylinder vacuum cleaners at cleaning small nooks and crannies or other hard to reach areas such as stairs, although some do come with an additional telescopic wand which can be detached.
Bagged vacuum cleaners collect the dirt in dust bags, which then have to be removed and replaced when full. The advantage of bagged over bagless vacuum cleaners is that many people find it easier to dispose of the dirt without any spillage but the disadvantage is that the bags can be expensive on an ongoing basis.
Handheld vacuum cleaners are small portable and rechargeable vacuum cleaners which can be used for light spills in small areas. They are used as a secondary vacuum cleaner and are not suitable as the main vacuum cleaner.
Lightweight vacuum cleaners are lighter than regular vacuum cleaners and are more suitable for people who are older or less mobile or for people who have to vacuum over large areas or over several floors and stairs. They are not generally as efficient in picking up dirt as some of the regular vacuum cleaners.
Wet and dry vacuum cleaners use both suction power and water to clean, often with the use of special chemicals. They can be used for extra deep cleaning and are also capable of picking up liquid spills as well as dust and dirt.
Rechargeable vacuum cleaners are small and portable vacuum cleaners which are used as a second vacuum cleaner for small areas and light spills.
Robotic vacuum cleaners have integrated sensors which allow them to move around the room on its own, without the need to be pushed around manually. Although technology is improving, they are still not widespread and are currently much more expensive than regular vacuum cleaners. They also have a far smaller capacity than regular vacuum cleaners so need to be emptied much more frequently.
Compact vacuum cleaners are small vacuum cleaners which are more lightweight than regular vacuum cleaner. Although not as efficient at picking up dirt as regular vacuum cleaners they are useful for small households or for people for whom a full size vacuum cleaner might be too heavy.
Bagless upright vacuum cleaners are vacuum cleaner which have an upright design, with a handle attached to the main unit, and which do not use vacuum cleaner bags. The dirt and dust is collected into an integrated container which the user empties when full.
Allergy vacuum cleaners are specifically designed to remove allergens from carpets and floors and are particularly suitable for asthma or allergy sufferers. Some vacuum cleaners have the British Allergy Association Seal of Approval and/or are certified by the German quality company TUV as being suitable for allergy sufferers. They have HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters which capture any particles which may cause an allergy and many are also very effective at picking up pet hairs.
